The Print Continuum - A National Juried Exhibition

East End Arts Council invites printmakers from across the United States to submit work for The Print Continuum, a national juried exhibition celebrating the intersection of printmaking's historical traditions and its expanding contemporary practices. We welcome work spanning traditional and conceptual printmaking, including experimental processes and interdisciplinary practices. Selected works will be featured in a two-month exhibition at East End Arts Council's 11 West Gallery in Riverhead, New York. Cash awards include: $1,000 for First Prize, $500 for Second  Prize, and $250 for Third Prize.

Open Call for Artists: Celebrating the tradition and expansion of contemporary printmaking

A continuum is a spectrum, where distinct points are linked by gradual change rather than clear divisions. In printmaking, this concept reflects a medium that is not divided between “old” and “new,” but one in which history, innovation, and experimentation thrive in an ongoing dialogue. Today, artists continue to expand the possibilities of the medium through new technologies, collaborative approaches, and inventive processes while remaining rooted in its deep traditions. These innovations broaden the language of printmaking and contribute to its ongoing evolution.

The Print Continuum celebrates artists who thoughtfully engage with the printmaking medium by honoring its rich history and craft, embracing experimentation and innovation, or expanding the expressive potential of printmaking. 

Selections will be made by artists Ellen Wiener and Bill Albertini. The exhibition will be curated by Mich Miller, Head of Printmaking at East End Arts Council. 

Ellen Wiener “I have used all manner of print media in my work since the early 1970’s and ’still learning!” She studied printmaking at The Art Student’s League, Bennington College and The University of New Mexico and has produced work at Constellation Studios, The Women’s Studio Workshop and The Center for Book Arts.  Her original Charles Brand press occupies pride of place in her North Fork studio where she employs etching, woodcut, hot-needle intaglio, collograph, chine colle, monotypes, hand carved stamps, linoleum cuts, & stencils and frequently uses digital media in innovative hybrid combinations.

Bill Albertini “ My connection to printmaking is tenuous at best having been declared persona non grata in the printmaking department during my first year in art school for flattening beer cans and inking them up to run through the press. In my defense I did use a raggedy old blanket… That said I have used various forms of mechanical and electronic reproduction in my own work over the decades and did do a stint working at a print gallery in the late 1980s where I was involved with the production of vacuum formed multiples by Peter Halley and prints by Sarah Charlesworth, Terry Winters and other contemporary artists of the period”

Mich Miller is a master printmaker and painter whose work explores the intersection of traditional printmaking techniques and contemporary painting. Miller received a BFA in Printmedia from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015 and an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University in 2021. They are the founder of The Print Shop LA, a collaborative printmaking studio in Los Angeles, and serve as a recurring faculty member in the Department of Art and Art History at Loyola Marymount University. Miller is currently the Head of Printmaking at East End Arts Council in Riverhead, New York, where they oversee printmaking programs and community engagement. Their work has been exhibited nationally and reflects a commitment to both artistic practice and printmaking education.
